FAMILY BUSINESS

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luk 2:49)

Since the purpose of the christian family is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, wouldn’t it be wise to “follow in his steps”, 1 Pet. 2:21? On this subject we enter in to the finances of the family. How does God want us to “make a living”? If you ask a sample of people the question “What do you do?”, they will mostly answer by telling you their occupation or job, or basically how they make money. If our sample was from christians or non christians the answers would probably be the same. If you ask these people why do they live where they live, they will say something like “This is where I work.” Now let me introduce another factor. The Bible says, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows,” (1Ti 6:10). Is it possible that the deep apostasy our nation is in is because we have peirced ourselves through with many sorrows because the love of money has dominated our motivations in living, and not the passionate desire to glorify our Lord Jesus Christ by depending on Him for everthing in life?

Let us make a comparison. We can earn money to sustain our families to be able to carry out the mission our Heavenly Father has given us. From another angle, we earn money so that we can fulfill the lusts of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. We want our children to have high paying jobs so they can have all “the things we never had when we were growing up”. Now I know we need money, and lots of it in our society, but I know that “my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus,” (Php 4:19). Further, “And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful,” (Tit 3:14). I take it that this refers to an honorable job which allows one to take care of “necessary uses” so that they be “not unfruitful”.
